The McIver Award honors outstanding community service providers. It was created in honor of Dr. F. Thomas McIver, former RSI Board member and pediatric dentist at UNC.
The Board of Directors of Residential Service is proud to announce the 2016 McIver Award to: Farmer Foodshare’s POP Market.
Farmer Foodshare’s Pop Market: Introduced to RSI by former Board Member, Jerry Levit, this program believes everyone deserves fresh, healthy food. Farmer Foodshare’s POP Market (Pennies on the Pound) is another way to connect people who grow food to people who need it. The POP Market is a year-round, wholesale market that connects small to mid-scale farmers with community organizations.
Their goal is to help hard-working farm families (especially beginning farmers, female farmers and farmers of color) make a decent living, while making nutritious, local food available for a broader range of people who want it.
This program which provides a sustainable model of buying fresh local produce from small family farms has also expanded to offering cooking demonstrations and preparing community meals for the groups benefiting the program. RSI’s partnership with Farmer Foodshare has grown from a pilot launch at a few RSI homes to now 10 of the homes receiving fresh produce weekly and also hosting community dinners with other friends from our local community. Farmer Foodshare annually serves fresh local produce to over 20,000 people a year with support from local farmers, farmers markets, community volunteers, student groups, and non-profit partners.
