Direct Supports Coordinator - for Supported Living home, hourly position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Special Education, Psychology or related
field, one year’s experience in the MR/DD field, and a valid
driver’s license.
OR
Two years’ college and three years’ experience in the MR/DD
field, and valid driver’s license.
Training Requirements:
RSI Orientation Classes, Universal Precautions, Standard First
Aid and CPR, and in-home training. Medical Administration Class,
Driving Safety, NCI (North Carolina Interventions), and other
trainings as requested.
General Responsibilities
A. Lead and supervise all shift activities, including all
personnel.
B. Provide support and supervision of RSI residents to lead
self-directed lives and to participate fully in their home and
community environments.
C. Implement Individual Support Plans, RSI’s Policies and
Procedures, principles of normalization, and maintain a
therapeutic relationship with residents.
D. Create a hospitable and professional work environment and
function as a positive role model for residents and staff.
Specific Duties:
1. Provide leadership, training, instruction, and constructive
feedback to staff throughout the shift regarding ideas, goal
treatment plans, teaching strategies, etc.
2. Plan all activities, designate staff assignments prior to
each shift and conduct shift meetings as necessary.
3. Ensure all staff on shift are engaging residents, providing
quality care and instruction, and/or completing household
projects as needed throughout the shift.
4. Assist residents by facilitating and teaching daily living
routines to maximize skills, abilities, and independence:
a. Hygiene (toileting, shaving, tooth brushing, showering)
b. Personal help (dressing, eating, grooming)
c. Domestic skills (laundry, housekeeping)
d. Meal preparation & nutrition education
e. Finance management
f. Social and leisure skills
g. Vocational / educational development
5. Ensure scheduled objectives developed for residents are
completed.
6. Maintain supervision of any resident who leaves the home
without appropriate authorization.
7. Communicate and interact with consultants, parents/guardians,
and other individuals appropriately, informing them when
necessary of significant changes for residents.
8. Ensure completion of daily data and monthly progress notes
concerning developmental training, specific needs, medical, and
behavior issues.
9. Enhance the ability of the RSI residents to lead a
self-determining life by providing the support and information
necessary to build self-esteem, and assertiveness to make
decisions.
10. Plan and implement diverse and appropriate resident-directed
recreational activities.
11. Be knowledgeable of all medications used by residents, and
after completion of medication course, ensure proper
administration and supply of medications.
12. Support residents in the development of friendships and
other meaningful relationships.
13. Be knowledgeable about the range of effective communication
strategies and teach skills necessary to establish a
collaborative relationship with residents.
14. Keep supervisor informed of any problems or significant
issues regarding the residents or operation of the group home.
15. Ensure that safety standards are maintained, including
conducting fire drills and ensuring that all staff members lift
and transfer residents using correct body mechanics and
procedures.
16. As needed, assist and perform lifting and transferring of
residents using correct body mechanics and procedures.
17. Respond appropriately to aggressive behavior using standard
NCI (North Carolina Intervention) techniques.
18. Promote the health and wellness of all RSI residents.
19. Be knowledgeable about the formal and informal supports
available in the community and actively assist residents to
identify and gain access to such supports.
20. Document, review, and reconcile resident finances with
active resident participation.
21. Ensure that all aspects of food service, grocery shopping,
and meal preparation are completed with active participation by
residents.
22. Maintain general upkeep of the home, equipment, and vehicle
to meet the highest possible standard.
23. Ensure that residents receive on-going medical, dental, and
related health services. Work with supervisor to schedule and
attend routine doctor/dental appointments, lab work, and medical
tests.
24. Attend and actively participate in staff meetings,
Individual Support Plan meetings, and group home trainings as
requested.
25. Participate in and/or complete staff evaluations,
recognition, and disciplinary/counseling sessions.
26. Maintain documentation as required ensuring timeliness,
accuracy, confidentiality, ethical practice, and overall best
professional standards.
27. Act in the best interests of resident needs, desires, and
interests, not in response to staff interests.
28. Identify the rights of residents and assert the need to
respect these rights when any person is violating them in any
way.
29. Be familiar with and apply organizational mission and
values.
30. Communicate at all times in an honest, professional, and
timely manner.
31. Work and be on time to all scheduled shifts and trainings.
Attendance and punctuality are mandatory.
32. Pursue knowledge and information necessary to perform job
duties.
33. Engage in work related activities at all times.
34. Demonstrate flexibility within the role and perform other
duties as assigned.
